Akkeshi has lived by the sea since the Edo period — herring, salmon and trout, saury and whaling — and today still by saury, oysters, salmon, clams and kelp. Opened in October 1988 to show that close bond between the town and the ocean. On the second floor is the easternmost planetarium in Japan.
