TOMORROW: A Large Sculpture by Tatsuya Ishii

A large FRP sculpture (2012; 160 cm wide, 250 cm tall, 125 cm deep) designed by Tatsuya Ishii, the artist best known as vocalist of the band Kome Kome Club, on display in the museum's entrance hall. It takes the form of a young woman raising a sphere that stands for the earth and sea, made to carry the memory of the disaster forward as a symbol of recovery. Ishii is from Kitaibaraki in Ibaraki Prefecture, where his family was affected by the earthquake; with the archaeologist Sakuji Yoshimura he now runs a recovery arts project on the Hamadori coast. The display has been extended to 15 February 2027. The entrance hall is free to enter; admission is charged for the main exhibition area.
